Sit, Stand, Move: A healthier way to work

Building a Healthy Work Rhythm with the Right Furniture

Most of us spend the better part of the working day sitting down. That's by no means a moral failing, it's just what office work looks like. But there's been enough research over the past decade to say with confidence that spending eight hours largely sedentary isn't great for the body. Lower back pain, neck and shoulder stiffness, afternoon fatigue that hits harder than it should, these are common complaints in most offices, and they're not unrelated to how we're set up.

Height-adjustable desks have become the most visible response to this, and there's a reason they've stuck around beyond the initial trend. But they're worth understanding properly before you invest.

What the research actually says

Sit-stand desks are effective at reducing physical discomfort, people who use them regularly report less neck, shoulder, and lower back pain, and feel less fatigued at the end of the day. Where the evidence gets more cautious is around productivity. Feeling more comfortable does make it easier to concentrate, but that's different from the desk itself boosting cognitive performance. A height-adjustable desk is primarily an investment in physical wellbeing, and the productivity case flows from that.

The other thing worth knowing: the point isn't to stand instead of sitting, it's to move between the two. Staying on your feet for hours has its own drawbacks. The benefit comes from breaking up long periods of stillness, and that means building a loose rhythm into the day. The desk makes switching easy, but the habit is what delivers the benefit.

Setup matters more than people think

A height-adjustable desk set at the wrong height is just an expensive fixed desk. For standing, the surface should be roughly at elbow height with arms relaxed and forearms roughly parallel to the floor when typing. Most people set their standing desk too low, which creates its own shoulder and neck strain. The chair, desk height, and monitor position all need to work together; a good desk paired with a poorly set chair doesn't do much at all.

What to look for

Not all height-adjustable desks are built the same, and in a commercial environment the difference tends to show up over time rather than immediately.

The Haven range covers most office fitouts well. The Haven Electric is AFRDI Level 6 and BIFMA certified, the commercial durability ratings that matter when desks are being adjusted multiple times a day by different people. The Haven Boost sits in the same family with a 15-year warranty and Green Tag certification. Both have programmed height memory, which sounds minor but makes a real difference to whether people use the adjustment or quietly leave it at one height.

For open-plan environments where noise is also a factor, the Dart E-panel pairs well with either desk. Made from 100% PET with a minimum 60% recycled content, it absorbs up to 85% of sound energy and slides on without any complicated installation, a simple way to add acoustic comfort at desk level alongside the movement benefits.

A monitor arm is close to essential, keeping the screen at eye level whether sitting or standing removes one of the most common sources of neck strain and anti-fatigue matting is worth considering for standing periods on hard floors.

For teams, not just individuals

Adjustable desks are sometimes treated as a premium for senior staff or people with existing health issues. But back pain and musculoskeletal discomfort are among the most common causes of sick days in office environments, the case for a broader rollout is as much practical as it is about wellbeing.

For most NZ businesses, the question isn't whether adjustable desks are worth it. It's how to introduce them in a way that people use them well, which means a bit of guidance on setup and habit, not just new furniture.
